Why 'Quality Time' Doesn't Have to Be Special

Why 'Quality Time' Doesn't Have to Be Special

Quality time is often confused with elaborate activities (themed days out, crafted experiences, special outings). Most actual quality time is mundane: driving to school, cooking dinner, walking the dog, watching TV together. Being present, not the activity, is what matters.

Why elaborate activities are over-rated

Exhaust parents (who then have less patience). Make 'normal' time feel inadequate by comparison. Create expectations kids hold against everyday moments. Distract from the real opportunity (ordinary time together).

What works

Talking without phones during meals. Co-watching shows kids actually like (not your favourites). Long car journeys where conversation happens naturally. Cooking together. Reading at bedtime. These are the conversations kids remember, not the themed birthday parties.

Lower the bar for 'quality time'. Most of it happens accidentally during everyday activities — if you're present enough to be in it.
